CTF 125 Metagenomics Discovery Challenge (MDC) $325.00 Asynronious online & synchronous non-mandatory on Thursday’s from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm. (Online – Certificate-based course). This independentstudy course is offeredin ahybrid formatand itwill beusing Team-Based Learning pedagogyand Open Educational Resources. MDC doesn’t have anyprerequisites, but a background inbiological sciences and/orcomputer sciencewould be helpful. You will learnhow to build and use custom cloud-based VMs usingcross assembly Unix/Linux based programs andNext Generation Sequencing (NGS),then applythose skills byhunting for new viruses—as wellas lookingfor the genetic hallmarks of antibiotic resistance—in real datasetsof DNA. At theend of the semester, students willcreate a 3-5 minute video using KCC CUNY resources to explain the tools they’ve learned, the importance of viral discovery and antibiotic resistance, and their discoveries. One team of undergraduate students can win scholarships that can be applied to MDC CUNY tuition courses at KCC.

This class is designed for anyone who wants to learn coding and system administration to speed up and automate many tasks, including finding and editing files, editing text, performing advanced searches, downloading data from the web, backing up and archiving data, and transferring files through a network. For Linux administrators, the Linux shell is also a great tool for monitoring system health and deploying updates and software.
